this friday, on FOX .... buttercup
we have been asked to perform on the san antonio fox affiliate KABB's morning show on friday, september 21. morning implies early, but the exact time is not known. we're guessing they'll save our awesome performance for the show's end, around 9 or 10 am. needless to say, just set your dvr, or tivo the thing and then later, at the crack of noon, crawl out of your bed and see whether or not we blasted the camera's with sillystring and were never asked back, or we wore animal costumes that became too hot under the studio lights and we had to strip down to our glitter banana hammocks. either way, it should be fun.
we are steadily amassing tracks for the third EP and gearing up for our san antonio release show of "living again" which is saturday the 22nd of september at limelight. there, that's the news part.
and now for the weekly musing. which is just to make sure one of us writes something each week:
birds are cool. they can fly and poop wherever they please.
so until next week, keep dreaming of flying... and pooping.
love,
buttercup

yes, it's true.
buttercup will be performing at 2 pm in waterloo park in lovely austin tx for this year's austin chronicle hot sauce festival. at 2 pm, it should be either scorching hot or drippingly wet. either way we will be there to provide inspiration for all those who have a chip in their hand and a burn in their heart. here's some info from the chronicle website. it sounds like bringing canned goods is the way to go. hope to see you there!
le coop.

no news is sad news
dear cuppite,
it makes us just as sad as perhaps you feel when we see our website with no new news added. it's not as if things aren't going on. there is news. it's just the boring kind you find in those christmas letters that some families insist on writing.
erik got a root canal. odie's cat has ringworm. joe's car is working again. jamie is in florida. boring....
but we are working on EP #3, and planning some special shows for the upcoming release of EP #2. EP #3 will have some old chestnuts from the buttercup annals and some brand new songs that the band has just finished so it should be a treat for old and new listeners.
let's see. what else is there? this rain is awesome. it's like the whole town ran on two legs to el salvador and settled into the rain forest quite nicely next to some quetzals.
flight of the conchords, a new series on HBO, is fantastic. it really makes you want to work on your falsetto.
well, that's all i can think of for now. check out the new slideshow on our myspace page and we hope to see you at one of our upcoming shows. save up some dollarinos for your EP!
love,
joe and le cups

i know it’s me
i know the upper edge of your mind
is the sun in the sky
i heard the broken hymn than you’re singing
floating on highi felt so damn bad love drips and gathers in the sand
but now my eyes have seen just what my hand has donei’m starting to feel a little bit uneasy
this wake is making me queesy
does anybody got a little pill?
just keep your eyes on the horizoni know it’s mean
i know it’s mean
i know it’s me
i know it’s mei felt your fever as my heart leapt
it swelled like the tide
i said “my eyes open”
you said “you’re joking you got a sleep walker’s stride”
i know the upper edge of your mind is the sun in the sky
i heard the broken hymn than you’re singing
floating on high
i saw the grackles gather at sundown
a wonderful tribe
just then your whispers brush me like kisses
making me smile
the sky and the ocean my music your music

but now my eyes have seen just what my hand has donethe sky and the ocean
that little thought that you’re trying to hide

it’s true it’s bonafide
you wanna know why?
cuz when i’m sleepwalking with you
i’m only half awake

i just can’t be shocked anymore
i’m insulated down to the core
all the loose wires
once stripped and frayed
are all soldered down now
not a single stray hair left out of place
they took good care to give me a new face
identity theft
all that they left was hardly a tracememories stored a closet of props
wiped perfectly clean
like sparkling counter tops
just waiting for death
to offer his hand
a bullet of hairdoos
just another sure sign we’re not meant to stay

mattress factory + fun = TABC
wow,
we all really had a great time performing at the mattress factory on saturday. we hope you in attendance did also. thanks everyone for singing and clapping along with almost every song. we felt so... relieved. relieved to know we still have the best fans a band could want here in our beautiful, rainy hometown.
and then, i went to my car to look for a cd, and found the SAPD outside and things kind of took a turn from there. the mattress factory incurred some fines and a few P.I tickets were given out, but things could have been much worse.
thanks go out to all of you for being good, cooperative citizens & for not starting a riot (hills -- muttering under his breath) and to our host eva, who was very understanding about the whole matter.
suffice to say, we hope to make the mattress factory a regular place to perform and again, thanks to all of you who came out. we had a wonderful time, despite the presence of various law enforcement agencies at the evening's end.
see you all soon,
joe and the cup

the grackle doeth not fly in july
dear fans and friends,
it is with heavy hearts that we announce the cancellation of what would have been an entire month of grackle mundys in celebration of contemporary art month. both erik and odie are out of town as we write for work and family reasons respectively, and although we received a very nice write-up in the SA current, we just aren't able to perform at this time.
again, we are truly sorry. we love you san antonio, and will never forget what you've done for us.
but hopefully we can surprise you with a "secret" grackle mundy before the end of the month,
so keep watching the skies, stay out of the heat, and look for us to be performing in town again soon.
love,
buttercup

New EP -- Living Again!
Buttercup will release a new 6 song EP in August 2007. What follows is some notes on the songs by Erik.
"Living Again" 6 song EP
Song by Song Commentary by Erik Sanden
"Living Again"
This song was written by Joe Reyes about 4 years ago. It's been a staple in our live set for quite some time. We'd had a few aborted missions in trying to capture it on tape, finally getting a version this March that would sit on this largely acoustic EP. I remember Joe showing me the song for the first time, sitting on the edge of my crummy couch in my old apartment. I remember that high feeling, and thinking this is a truly great song. He was really, really down at the time, and this happy song was his first love song to the band. The lyric is about how being in Buttercup was making him feel re-invigorated, like living again. So my hope is that he keeps on ticking with his beautiful songs, his Bacharach-like mind churning out chords and inversions until the sun finally sets on all of us."Innocence, in a Sense"
Odie recently penned this lilting ballad, with its lazy chords and gorgeous vocal. I hear him singing to an innocent soul, a child, his inner child, his own boy. Somehow I hear a tiny bit of Prince in Odie's vocal delivery. We took more than a few takes to finally hit this version that you hear, so stark and mellow. Can you hear the birds in the break? Joe's piano playing really cements the innocent progression of this, one of my very favorite Buttercup recordings, ever."Modulating from Montana"
This song was written in 1995 in Grand Marais Minnesota. I was sitting in my father's HAM radio room, listening to conversations from all over. I grabbed a pen and transcribed the lyric to this song, which largely came intact over the radio. Here I was really a scribe, taking dictation. This is one of the first songs I ever wrote, certainly the first that I felt was effective. I remember playing this song to my friend, sitting on my couch, and seeing her eyes mist over. I knew then that the song had something in it, an inner sadness. So when I recorded this take this spring I did it when I was thoroughly upset, down in a dark place. You might hear it in the voice, or feel it in the guitars. The way we don't want to let go, at the very end.
"In Love"
Musically this song takes more than a lot from Elliott Smith and his favorite band, the Beatles. Buttercup has been covering quite a few of his songs for a sometime. Consequently, his melodies have been swirling around in all our heads, and you may hear his echo throughout this take.Lyrically the song is darker than its melody. I try to sketch a pure love sickness, hoping that the incessant "in love" at the end underscores the way our minds work when were in the throws of love sickness. Odie and I sing in parallel throughout the body of the song, and I like to think of this as a duet. Both of us singing about our own obsessions, about how hard it is to control your thoughts when your thoughts are controlling you.
"Frost Heaves"
This is about my mother and father and the time they flipped their truck 5 miles south of their cabin in northern Minnesota. My dad said that they came to a rest hanging completely upside down, so he had to cut them out of their seat belts. He found himself standing in the flipped vehicle in a pool of quarters, they were spilled everywhere, on the roof, in the snow: he's always prepared for parking or carwashes. Luckily they were both ok, and walked away, "shaken but unbowed".I love the little keyboard lines and the ebow filigree that edges the verses like white icing. Joe laid this on top of the song in about a half hour of frenzied composition and tracking. During the solo, you can hear two bass lines sort of noodling about. This is both Joe and odie, bass soloing underneath it all.
"All the Sundays"
Joe's song about the day that functions as the end of his week, usually the aftermath to his musician's weekly work.Joe has said repeatedly since I've known him just how much he hates Sundays.

king william ode
we wrote a song at rehearsal today for the king william fair that we're playing on saturday at 4 pm. for those of you who wish to sing along, here are the lyrics. we stole the chords from the exploding sex kittens song about george harrison:
king wil-li-am
for you we come
and for the beer
it's number oneyou're number two
no, that's not true
the funnel cake
that's number twoking --- william
king --- william
king --- william
king --- william
king wil-li-am...
to paraphrase the words of george martin, "lads, you've just written your first number one hit".thanks, george!
see you there....

captains of industry
buttercup is proud to announce the upcoming release of a new 6 song EP, "captains of industry." these six songs lean more towards rock than previous buttercup releases. the ep features photos and art by ramin samandari. the record will be available may 12, 2007.
this from erik:
it's called "captains of industry" which is a cheeky title that is sort of a challenge to ourselves to see if we can uphold our promise to release 3 EPS and 1 full length in 2007. all of these will be self-produced, for the first time.
"captains of industry" has six songs that lean towards the more rocking mood of buttercup. as we recorded it seemed like these six songs hung together the best so that's the direction we took. in spite of the captain hat on the cover, nobody's really steering the boat. well i guess all of buttercup is, if you can steer in a buddhist way. if you can steer when practicing scream therapy.
blow by blow song comentary:
"softest strike" is about a woman who gets hit by a snowball that secretly had a rock in it. this track features mark rubinstein on piano and marcus rubio on violin. i like how this song goes from minimal verses to a big, chaotic ascending chorus. jamie's drum work on this track is some of his very best: from the simplest kick and snare pattern to crazed, wild, pounding drum fills and bashed cymbals.
"instant coffee part 2" is about torture. when working on the lyrics, I had this mental picture of a roman thug, his tunic obscenely loose getting pumped up to order up another round of abuse. there is a nod to John Lennon's "Instant Karma" here when odie, Joe and Jamie chant mantra-like "Karma, Karma, C'mon!"
this song is a sister to a song on our first record. where part one was hyper minimal (one chord, acoustic guitar and oud accompaniment), part two is complicated with strange chord changes, and dramatic shifts in tempo. i wanted them to work together in stark contrast.
"sun in the sky": scream therapy on a boat at sea. this is the song where we had our first epiphany, which came when we recorded the sounds of Joe trashing my bathroom: kicking the trashcan, slamming the toilet seat, dumping my hair care products into the bathtub. this is when we first began to realize, that sonicly we can do whatever we want to on this record.
"identity theft": this is joe's song about identity theft. it has joe's signature sonic lushness, something that can absorb the listener like a water bed of electric guitar. i love the walky bass and the wash of guitar, splattered all over the song.
"flowers and elephants": how when the us dropped the bomb on hiroshima, it burned everyone's skin regardless of color. i love the quality of odie's voice on this song, which we double tracked. jamie does an excellent elephant noise on the bridge. i'm the dog, joe is the monkey, odie the dove.
"suffer": this song was recorded live, and is presented here with all it's present roughness. we barely knew this song when we captured this take: i think it was our second run thru the song. you can hear us searching for the changes, but it seems to have the energy that a new song loses once it's very practiced.
the lyric is about war. our war, their wars.
this is not the happiest bunch of songs, but thats what Buttercup was feeling this past winter. we hope you enjoy it.

really big shoe...really big....
buttercup has been invited back to austin's cactus cafe for a performance this friday, march 30. thank you so much, griff, for asking us back to what we consider to be one of the state's premier listening rooms.
billed as "the three faces of buttercup" (two-faced having a completely different meaning), we will perform three sets of music: an acoustic set (toy accordion, watch out), an electric set (guitars set to stun) and a set of covers (a big surprise for some).
we hope to see you there.
meanwhile, we are developing mighty humps in our backs as we labor over our instruments and computers; putting the finishing touches on EP number 1 which is slated for release next month. stay tuned and we will keep you informed of our progress using our patented buttercup doppler radar.
see you all soon....

little mice
hey everyone who looks at our page and goes, "no new blog? what a bunch of lazy sods!",
we've been recording songs for a new album at erik's house while it's nice and chilly here in south texas. chilly is relative, however. if it hits 50 degrees F, then we all bust out our leather jackets. our apologies to our friends in england or chicago. we feel your pain as the sun brings us near 70 degrees every afternoon.
but it's been going well. it's precluded us from booking many shows, though. sorry about that.
we did get accepted to sxsw, which we quickly rejected. (kidding)
so we will be performing in austin in march, but until then, we are like little mice, nibbling on a giant block of cheese, whittling it down into some sort of beautiful, shapely sculpture.
so the next time you see us, bring some cheese, a grater or two, and a tiny venus di milo, and we'll swap for some new recordings.
thanks so much for your charm and support. we love you all. it sounds cliche, but it's true.
sincerely,
the 4 little mice of cupland

dial a song is dying
our answering machine is slowing down dramatically, the little gears that power dial a song are creaky, old, and starting to seize up. the song that is currently on dial a song, "instant coffee part 2" which normally clocks in at a mere two minutes and 20 seconds, takes up a full 3 minutes of your listening time.
buttercup just won an ebay auction for a replacement model.
hopefully that will mean more songs and more life for dial a song.

houston, hawks, happiness...
we'd like to thank everyone who came to our show on saturday jan. 27 at super happy fun land. it's a magical wonderland of a venue and we think we've found our new home in houston. thank you to bryan, all the cute kitties, and the rest of the staff there for making our evening more than super happy. we can't wait to return. also thanks to charles p and his much more than 10% of a band. they sounded great and brought lots of friends, old english 800, and space-age toothpicks along with some really good performing.
we counted over a dozen red tail hawks and osprey on the way to and from the show, which bodes well for the bird of prey population. we also counted over 4 breaded shrimp on the mixed fajita platter at 'alma latina' on sheppard rd. we count things for fun.
next up is our showcase at sxsw in austin in march. meanwhile, we continue to record, read, nap, do back exercises, and enjoy being cold for a change. thank you everyone for supporting us. check our myspace page for posts of new songs soon.
love,
le cup

a recommendation
It's been freezing cold down here in Texas. So I've had quite a bit of time locked inside the arctic apartment to listen to some great music. I'd like to make a recommendation: check out John Aselin's new record he made with the Dirty Rugs. "Banished from the Night" and "Awake" have been freaking me out, making me warm inside. Try it for yourself.
Love and Warmth,
Erik

Our Christmas shows at the Red Room turned out to be a success. We sold out both nights and were surrounded by good friends and family. The two shows were quite different. Monday was loose and chaotic with no formal set list. We collectively sang lots of Christmas Carols and some Buttercup standards. Adrian Foxbaker, former member of Buttercup, joined us for "Nosin' Around." The second night was quiter and edgier to start, and complete chaos at the end. We saw the Gomez clan writhe and fall into a interpretive dance frenzy. We witnessed Marcus Rubio shaking like he was speaking in tongues. We held serve in the war in the court, with all of your help.
We send our warmest thanks to Jazz, Delphine and Cary at the Red Room for all of their help and support. Also thank you Leslie for the photos. XO.
